Futian — the Yiwu International Trade City — is five connected districts holding more than 70,000 stalls. It is not a shopping centre. Nothing on the shelves is for sale one at a time; the display is a sample wall, and what you buy is a carton that comes from a warehouse somewhere else in the city.
Most of what makes it hard is not the language. It is that the rules are unwritten: no price is displayed, the minimum is never posted, and packing details are given only when you ask the right question.
How the address works
Every stall has an address that tells you exactly where it is, once you know how to read it. Our own suppliers make good examples.
Read it as district, then gate, then floor, then street, then stall number. Give that string to any driver or porter in Yiwu and they will find it.

What a stall will and will not do

- Sell you a full carton, and tell you how many pieces are in it if you ask.
- Give a lower unit price as the quantity rises — usually in bands, not a smooth curve.
- Print your own logo or box, if you order enough of it.
- Deliver the cartons to a warehouse address inside Yiwu, often free.
- What it will not do
- Sell you one piece, or hold stock for you without a deposit.
- Quote a price in your currency, or in writing, unless you push for it.
- Handle export documents, customs or shipping.
- Answer in English. Almost every stall works in Chinese only.
What first-time buyers get wrong
The first mistake is treating the displayed sample as the product. Colours, print and packing are often options, not the specification — the same shelf model can arrive as a bare piece in a polybag or a printed colour box, at different prices.
The second is ignoring packing. A price of ¥4 means nothing until you know whether the carton holds 12 pieces or 240, because the carton is the unit you actually pay freight on. In our own catalogue, cartons run from a handful of pieces to two thousand.
The third is assuming a visit gets a better price than a regular buyer. It rarely does. A stall quotes a stranger defensively, and the first number is meant to be negotiated by somebody who will come back next month.
Common questions
Can I visit the market myself?
Yes — it is open to buyers, and a business visa is normally what you need. But a visit is worth planning around a specific list. Five districts and 70,000 stalls is roughly a week of walking if you go in without one.
Is the Futian market the same as Yiwu market?
In practice, yes. People say Yiwu market, Futian market and Yiwu International Trade City for the same place. Yiwu also has specialist markets elsewhere in the city — for furniture and building materials, for instance — that are not part of it.
Are the prices in the market lower than on the online wholesale platforms?
Often, and not always. The market price excludes the platform's fees and usually includes delivery inside Yiwu, but it is quoted to someone standing in front of the stall. What matters more is that a person can check the goods before they ship, which no online listing does for you.
Do stalls sell branded goods?
Some offer copies of well-known brands. We do not list them: a counterfeit shipment can be seized at the destination and the brand owner can act against the importer, not just the factory. Everything in our catalogue is screened for this before it goes live.
What is the difference between a stall and a factory?
Many stalls are the factory's own sales office; others are trading companies that buy from several factories. Both are normal. The trading company usually accepts smaller orders and mixed cartons; the factory is cheaper once the quantity is large.
